We will consider our deliverables a failure if we just tick the audit-proofing box for another few years.... Here’s the thing: the laws of safety are close siblings to the laws of physics. And the laws of safety and the laws of physics don’t care if you’ve ticked the boxes - they only ‘care’ if you really do have thick safety margins. Human factors training, and safety management in general, should be attitude-deep not just audit-deep; that is, the outcome shouldn't just be informational but transformational – at least in terms of having our 'safety conscience' reinvigorated.
If we really believe 70-80 percent of accidents are because of human factors, as accident after accident tells us; and if we really believe 99.999995% of non-accidents is because of human performance, as flight after flight tells us, why do we only spend 0.001 percent of our professional time deliberately improving such skills (most likely one day every two years)? You’re busy, We're busy. We don’t want to waste your time (or ours) completing a box-ticking course for auditors. We genuinely want to bolster your safety margins, encourage you and your team's awareness and ultimately move us all further away from the tragic edge of a serious incident or accident. That’s our passion and our call.
So... we’ve made sure our courses have modern research and the modern case studies and much of the material is enhanced by the PhD as mentioned in the intro page. Plus, the course is built around a Red Rule Human Performance Safety Model (a 'Human Factors 2.0' concept ) where we try our best to do two important things: First, to ‘functionalise’ the info; that is, conceptualise it in such a way you can fly it on a Monday morning not just talk about it over a coffee. (Hey, Parky was a lumber jack so he needs things to work not just make noise). And second, we try to put the humanity back into human factors by empowering the attributes and attitudes that make safety safe... (More on that in the deliverables...)
Which is why we love this quote by the safety legend himself : James Reason
“Whatever safety takes resides largely within very special people. Let’s hope you have such people when the occasion arises....” ~ The Human Contribution
We're not saying the course will plug every Swiss cheese hole or make your safety systems sing and dance but if you want to share an ongoing learning experience in which we give the pursuit of Human Factors excellence a red hot bash then drop us a line via LinkedIn.
Spiel over. Let us know which way you want to go. We'd love to share the call with you and your team.
PS: A quick note about costs. We personally think HF, CRM and Aviation Consultancy costs are sometimes too high... We're not out to rip you off but having said that the worker is worth their wages. We work hard to maintain our knowledge of current safety-science research, books and case studies and we work hard to produce decent deliverables for you which means we hope to be paid a fair wage. ‘Fair’ is outlined in any quotes provided which try to recognise economies of scale as course numbers get bigger which means the more people you have the cheaper per person it gets. Having said all that if the cost appears truly prohibitive please let us know as there may be some ways to 'sharpen the pencil' with the quote. Also, as above, let us know if you'd like details and/or a quote for any or all of the deliverables mentioned on the other pages.
